A blog from the Badass Breastfeeder really resonated with me. Those who know me are familiar with my path to parenthood and the obstacles my husband and I overcame along the way. 

For those who don’t know me, suffice it to say it involved six years of trying, praying, losing, and a lot of scientific and surgical intervention. All worth it in the end but it was a long, heartbreaking, emotional and physically painful journey.

Finally, our long-awaited daughter was born. It’s all roses from there, right? Not so much. After a C-section, I had issues with milk production and latching. I started pumping while still in the hospital (using my super ugly surgical belly band with holes cut in it so I could pump hands-free while holding and bonding with my newborn daughter). I pumped…and I pumped…and I pumped. My milk finally came in but guess what, the little missy DID NOT want to breastfeed. I tried the cradle hold, the football hold, I strategically placed Boppys and pillows to provide the ultimate comfy feeding environment for her…to no avail. Absolutely no interest in the boob and she would start screaming when I tried to feed her. She was unhappy. I was unhappy. My husband was unhappy. Even Buttercup the dog was unhappy.

I went to lactation consultants, breastfeeding mother’s circles and in the end, I decided to exclusively pump. And you know what? I was happier. My daughter was happier. My husband was happier. Heck, even Buttercup the dog was happier. I am here to tell you that no matter how you end up feeding your baby, you are a good mom and it will all turn out ok in the end.

If breastfeeding comes easily (and I hope it does!) that is wonderful. If you have to pump or use formula, that is perfectly fine, too. Keep yourself and your baby happy and healthy and you will be doing a great job, mama.
